Jan 3, 2026Overview Somatic symptom disorder involves focusing too much on physical symptoms such as pain or tiredness. This focus causes major emotional distress and makes it hard to function. You may or may not have another medical condition that causes these symptoms. But how you think, feel and behave because of the symptoms can be extreme.
Damage to areas of the brain involved with somatosensation, and/or damage to sensory receptors or the nerve pathways can causesomatosensoryimpairment. Conditions such as cerebral palsy, nerve injury or laceration, stroke, and nervous system disorders for instance spinal cord and brain injury, can result insomatosensoryimpairment.
Aug 23, 2024Rehabilitation therapy serves as an effective adjunct to pharmacologic treatment forsomatosensorydisorders. Deep phenotypic assessment improves the accuracy of diagnosis and treatment ofsomatosensorydisorders by accurately analyzing multilevel phenotypic information, solvingsomatosensorydisorder data, and identifying comorbidities.
SomatosensoryDisorders Disorders of sensory information received from superficial and deep regions of the body. Thesomatosensorysystem conveys neural impulses which pertain to proprioception, tactile sensation, thermal sensation, pressure sensation, and pain.
Abstract Although the manifestation of trauma in the body is a phenomenon well-endorsed by clinicians and traumatized individuals, the neurobiological underpinnings of this manifestation remain unclear. The notion of somatic sensory processing, which encompasses vestibular andsomatosensoryprocessing and relates to the sensory systems concerned with how the physical body exists in and relates ...
The purpose of this article is to review the role ofsomatosensoryperception in typical development, its aberration in a range of neurodevelopmental disorders, and the potential relations between tactile processing abnormalities and central ...
Somatic symptom disorder happens when a person feels significantly distressed about physical symptoms and has abnormal feelings and behaviors in response to them.
Jan 23, 2025Somatic symptom disorder involves physical symptoms causing significant distress, with a focus on epidemiology, clinical features, and illness progression.
Mar 30, 2025Chapter 8 explores the mechanisms involved in a series of sensations grouped under the term "somatosensorysensitivity." The pathways by whichsomatosensoryinformation is conveyed from the receptors to thesomatosensorycortex are described. After a...
Sensory integration and processing difficulties can be a feature of a number of disorders, including anxiety problems, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), [18] food intolerances, behavioral disorders, and particularly, autism spectrum disorder (ASD). [19][20][21] This pattern of comorbidities poses a significant challenge to those who claim that SPD is an identifiably specific ...

Thesomatosensorysystem, or somatic sensory system, is a subset of the sensory nervous system. The main functions of thesomatosensorysystem are the perception of external stimuli, the perception of internal stimuli, and the regulation of body position and balance (proprioception). [1]
Certain types of seizures are associated with thesomatosensorysystem. Cortical injury may lead to loss of thermal sensation or the ability to discriminate pain. An aura involving thermal and painful sensations is a phenomenon known to precede the onset of an epileptic seizure or focal seizure. Another type of seizure, called a sensory Jacksonian seizure involves an abnormal, localizable ...

Thesomatosensorycortex is the area of the brain responsible for processing sensory input from the body. It lies next to the primary motor cortex, which helps control purposeful movement. When thesomatosensorycortex sustains damage, this can result in sensory deficits and, due to its location, can even affect movement and balance. Thankfully, individuals withsomatosensorycortex damage can ...
Such disorders may affect proprioception and the perception of pain, touch, or temperature. Examples ofsomatosensoryimpairments include hypesthesia (decreased sensitivity of a sense), hyperesthesia (increased sensitivity of a sense), and hypoalgesia (diminished sensitivity to pain).
Somatic symptom and related disorders (SSRDs) occur when there are problems with the body's communication system. What are somatic symptom and related disorders (SSRDs)?Somatic symptom and related disorders (SSRDs) occur when there are problems with the body's communication system. Children with this condition have physical symptoms that can be upsetting but are not harmful. Symptoms may ...
A variety of diseases can lead tosomatosensoryimpairment, such as spinal cord injury, stroke, diabetic neuropathy, chemotherapy-related neuropathy. The manifestations are complex and varied, including hyperalgesia or sensory sensitivity, neuropathic pain, numbness, pruritus, etc. These diseases have a serious impact on people's quality of life and even endanger their lives and health ...
Background and Purpose— About 50% to 80% of stroke survivors present withsomatosensorydeficits.Somatosensorydeficits because of an ischemic stroke are determined by the infarct location. However, a detailed understanding of the long-term effect of lesions onsomatosensoryperformance is lacking. Methods— This prospective observational study enrolled 101 ischemic stroke patients. For ...

Sep 15, 2024WebMD explains the symptoms and treatment of a somatoform disorder -- a mental disorder in which patients experience pain that can't be traced to any physical cause.
Somatic symptom disorder is diagnosed when a person has a significant focus on physical symptoms, such as pain, weakness or shortness of breath, to a level that results in major distress and/or problems functioning.
The analysis and interpretation ofsomatosensoryinformation are performed by a complex network of brain areas located mainly in the parietal cortex.Somatosensorydeficits are therefore a common impairment following lesions of the parietal lobe. This chapter summarizes the clinical presentation, ex …
